Holyman Painting

Mixed Media Struggle 2: How Do I Stop Centering Everything?

My Indian Holyman Painting: Dispelling Fear and Offering Benediction.

June 13, 2011.

I haven’t painted for 11 years and now it’s hard to get it going again! Everything that I have been doing in my painting class is centered and this centering thing has to stop! Perhaps some of my problems from my ‘Holyman’ painting stem from the fact that my original photo is centered.

On my centered sketch I write:  ‘timid… too pretty! too careful!’ I don’t seem to be sure of anything anymore.

Am I craving balance with this centering thing? Or is it just that asymmetry is hard to achieve; using symmetry allows me to concentrate on the other principles of design: contrast, colour, repetition, rhythm. To counteract this tendency I deliberately transferred my holyman image off centre. And then panicked. What was I going to do with all that empty space?

Oh no! my holyman is off-centre!

my holyman painting has just been Photoshopped.

Photoshop to the rescue, again! I overlaid my painting with several photos, darkened it, drew in a hand. My focus on the hand is interesting; it’s meaning is to ‘dispel fear’ or ‘fearlessness’. Perhaps I am trying to tell myself something…
